Skin Care and Acne: Treating the most severe types of acne
Acne is a skin condition that manifests itself in various forms and degrees of severity, with the individual methods of treatment depending upon the actual type of acne in question. There are four different types of acne that fall into the category of severe and they include acne conglobata, acne fulminans, gram negative folliculitis, and nodulocystic acne.
With these particular types of acne vulgaris, treatment by a dermatologist or other trained professional is most always necessary as it may require the use prescription medication, or in the most severe instances, surgical procedures done in a sterile setting.
Some of the most common treatments administered for treating severe acne include prescription drugs such as antibiotics taken orally, and also, topical forms of medication applied directly to the affected areas of the skin.
When dealing with the most severe types of acne, treatment isn’t only intended for the outer layers of the skin where the pimples, blackheads and painful nodules are visible, but for treating the other possible side effects of the condition as well. With acne fulminans, a severe type of acne that usually appears suddenly along with other symptoms such as fever and inflammation of the joints, treatment may entail the use of NSAIDs, which are non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or isotretinoin.
The use of lasers is another way of treating severe acne and improving the appearance of the skin in what is known as photo therapy. Acne that is caused by mostly by clogged hair follicles benefits the most from this method of treatment, whereas chemical peels may be useful for getting rid of blackheads and minimizing the appearance of red, bumpy skin.
For the largest of cysts and lesions caused by acne, surgical extraction may be necessary. A comedo extraction is the surgical removal of cysts and blackheads or whiteheads and it is done to help reduce scarring and infection from occurring. Smaller cysts may, however, be treatable with the use of antibiotics or isotretinoin, but the larger ones will most usually need drained and excised.
While dealing with acne of any type or degree of severity, it’s always important to care for the skin correctly and protect it from further damage. Avoid any products containing alcohol or harsh ingredients, and keep the skin amply protected from ultraviolet rays at all times.
If you’re dealing with some form of severe acne, it’s best to be examined by your own physician or dermatologist who can recommend the best type of treatment for your particular skin. Never try to “pop” your own cysts caused by severe acne as permanent scarring, painful infections, or both, may occur.

There are certainly a lot of treatments for acne now available and most of which are quick and painless. The biggest point in most of this is cost. Most people like me who would suffer from acne don’t have an awful lot of money to spend on cosmetic surgery procedures as opposed to things that you would buy in a health store.
That would be the deciding factor for me as to what i would do to help treat my acne problem.
