How to treat and prevent acne scarring

Acne is a problem for many teens and adults alike, and can have serious physical and psychological ramifications. Add to this the scars that form as a result of acne and it isn’t hard to understand why its effects are so long lasting.

There are different types of acne, and each can leave different types of scars. The good news is these scars can be treated, and with the right daily acne regimen, in many cases prevented.

It is important to understand, not only the type of acne you have and how to treat it, but also your skin type. Treatment and scarring can both vary according to skin type, and you must know this information before you can begin treating the problem.

The occurrence of scarring is different for different people. It is often difficult to predict who will and won’t scar, how extensive or deep the scars will be, and how long the scars will persist.

Likewise, it is also difficult to predict how successfully scars can be treated and prevented.

The only sure way to treat and prevent acne scarring is to treat acne early on in its course, and to do so for as long as it takes to clear up the problem. Remember, treating acne may not be a short-lived process. While some people with mild forms of acne are able to treat breakouts as they occur, others must constantly treat the condition to help prevent breakouts from occurring more frequently.

The more inflammation can be eliminated, the more likely it is that scars can be prevented. This is especially true when preventing acne aggravation. The more you irritate an inflamed an area, the more likely it is to scar.

If you have a known tendency to scar from acne, whether mild, moderate, or severe, you should seek the care of a dermatologist who can suggest treatments to help eliminate and prevent further acne scarring.
There are two general types of acne scars, which are defined by tissue response to inflammation. They are: scars caused by tissue formation, and scars caused by loss of tissue.

Scars caused by increased tissue formation are called kelloids or hypertrophic scars. The term hypertrophy means “enlargement”, or “overgrowth”. These scars are associated with excessive amounts of collagen in the skin, overproductions of which, is due to the skin cells’ response to injury. This excess collagen builds up to form a smooth, irregularly shaped scar. This type of scar can persist for years, but may diminish over time.

Scars that result from loss of tissue are similar to those caused by Chickenpox, and are more common than hypertrophic scars. One such type is an ice pick scar. This type of scar is usually small, with a jagged edge. This type of scar can be improved by stretching the skin, though; hard ice pick scars cannot be stretched out. This is a very common type of acne scar, and, perhaps, one of the easiest to treat.

There are various types of scars that fall under each of the two categories, and treatment for each may vary. A physician can help you decide if surgical treatment is necessary or even advisable. The best way to prevent acne scars is to prevent acne.

Acne Scar Treatment July 24, 2008 at 8:14 PM

Acne scarring is perhaps worse than the acne itself.

My acne scars weren’t horrible. They probably weren’t even that noticeable after I put on my foundation. However, I certainly noticed them and that was all it took to bother ME.

If you’ve got acne scars, you may feel a bit helpless. But you don’t have to because there are alternatives to getting rid of acne scars. And you CAN do something about it.

So what do you do about it? Well, there is totally a solution … actually there are many.

These are NATURAL treatments.

Now, just because you hear the word “natural”, I don’t want you to shake your head and think you need to just buy some over the counter miracle cream. These remedies WORK! And you’ll find that by consistently using them, your acne scars WILL fade just like mine did.

So without further ado, here are my favorite natural acne scar solutions:

Vitamin E
Don’t underestimate the power of this healing lotion. You can get it at any drugstore in topical form. I have a HUGE bottle of it under my sink :) . Vitamin E naturally heals scars by moisterizing the damaged skin. Use it everyday to fade away acne scars.

Cocoa Butter
This one should be used carefully. If your acne is not already under control, cocoa butter does pose the threat of additional breakouts. However, if you’re using the 3 Day Cure technique and your skin is finally clear, this is a powerful healing tool. Cocoa Butter will soften skin, lighten the scars and make them fade into nothing. I love this one. By the way, Cocoa Butter also works great on fading stretch marks.

Honey
Okay, this is totally gonna change your life! Honey works overtime on acne & acne scars. Yes, Honey! When I first learned about this natural remedy, I was pretty bewildered. The sound of it alone is confusing. Honey is a sticky, sugary substance. How can it possibly clear up skin?

Honey kills bacteria while simultaneously lessens the red look of irritated skin. The acidity in the honey evens out your skin tone, shrinks current pimples and will give your skin a softer feel. Listen, I know you may be skeptical of this solution. I was at first, then I tried it. This natural acne scar remedy works great.

Lemon
Lemon will help clear up acne as well as fade acne scars. Plus your face will smell like a freshly shined harwood floor, so that’s a plus ;)

The acidity in the juice will lighten the redness of the scars and balance your skin’s pH levels to prevent future breakouts. Give it a shot.

I agree that good nutrition and vitamins are important to fighting acne and being healthy, but do we have any good information on just what actually helps, and how much? I mean, you should be taking your vitamins anyway, but it would be nice to know how much of what has what effect.

Cheers.

Well, I have always believed that only a physician can tell you exactly what to take and how much.
This is what people should always do: see a doctor first!
For any other informational purpose (and a second opinion, why not?) there is a good deal of vitamin related information on the internet, and one good starting point could be your site :)

Home made acne treatment
would be the best option mainly for the teenagers as their skin is very soft so any cosmetic product can’t give the natural skin to them.
Teen acne may be very annoying mostly for those teenagers who want to look good. However, there are many acne treatments and products are available in the market but choosing any natural way of treating acne would be very advantageous as it doesn’t have any side effect and it keeps your skin very healthy.
I have also heard people many times saying that my acne cured within three days and there are also some articles on internet but don’t you feel that it seems rather indigestible matter. I think acne takes long time to be cured on the other hand it affects a period of life that may be from five years to ten years. Anyhow, the best way is antibiotic treatment for acne.

There are numerous home remedies floating around the web about treating acne scars. Some are good and siome are just worthless so be careful and be sure to read up on them and ask your doctor for their opinion before embarking on any acne skin care treatment.

My father in law is a dermatologist and he usually tells everybody to avoid all these special treatments and cleansers that are being sold. He usually just recommends soap and water (or often only water).
