Discover The Actual Facts Concerning Acne

For a great deal of time now acne has been the terror of both sexes during their teenage years and a topic rarely mentioned. Folk who have suffered with acne have been viciously tormented and ridiculed, and shockingly christened with a name such as acne face. Only those who have unfortunately suffered from the disease can truly understand how immensely damaging such name calling can prove to be. Over the years amazing puzzles have been cracked in the symptoms and causes of acne which have also aided the creation of effective acne treatments.

Acne is the name of an inflammatory disease of the skin often presenting itself in teenagers. Acne displays itself in the excessive production of sebum by the sebaceous glands which alarmingly become clogged. Acne can cause a malfunction in the follicles/pores in the skin on the face, chest and back as well as the arms. Those pores and follicles which have become blocked are medically labeled as comedo.

Keep in mind: Acne is an inflammatory disease

The comedone are the blockages in the pores which consists of keratin and sebum. A comedo is referred to as being open or closed. An open comedo is what we commonly refer to as a ‘blackhead’, and the closed comedo is what we commonly refer to as a ‘whitehead’.

Once a comedone has formed it is usually followed by the most highly visible and unpleasant symptom of acne – spots. First the comedone becomes infected and with this comes inflammation and redness of the skin, which then leads to an outbreak of pimples. The spots frequently become filled with pus and the skin surrounding the spot looks incredibly red and is sore to the touch.

There are 2 types of bacteria responsible for the infection and inflammation in acne, these are called Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. As well as being responsible for the formation of pus filled pimples, acne abcesses and cysts can develop.

Acne cures and treatments: Amazingly our scientists have made fantastic strides forward in the comprehension of the involved in the formation of, and the control of, acne. Astonishingly there has not been many advances in the comprehension of the reasons for the development of acne. Today, it is usually accepted that a collection of factors, such as stress, hormone levels and diet can all play a role in the development of acne.

There are countless numbers of scientists attempting to discover the role of genetics in the likelihood of acne development. Even if they do not manage to find the exact causes we can be certain that the increased understanding of the disease will help in the creation of new treatments. It is a strange fact that, often, when a single scientific discovery is published it affects other studies and commonly further crucial discoveries are made sometimes in an unrelated scientific field.

Acne can be disfiguring and emotionally embarrasing for teens and young adults alike. It is so sad that it can literally ruin one’s life and it even drives some young people to commit or contemplate suicide.
